One of my absolute favorite types of sessions to shoot is an engagement session. This is usually the first time I meet couples face to face and its a great opportunity to get to know one another and just chat it up. Your engagement session is pretty darn important event because these are the images you probably want to use for your Save the Date cards or maybe even your wedding website. You’ll want to make sure you do a little bit of planning to ensure you’ll get the photos you want and will love for a lifetime.
1. What To Wear – Try to choose clothes that you would normally wear – now is not the time to reinvent your look. You want your friends and family to recognize you in the photos and you want to document life as it is at this moment with the person you love. A general rule is that you should look like yourself but slightly polished.
Remember your clothing should compliment one another – do NOT want tot wear matching outfits. Please, please, please stay away from jeans and white t-shirt look (it became uncool sometime in the 90’s). Try to wear similar color families and also avoid busy patterns that can distract from the focus of the image – you.
Lastly don’t overthink it. I’m guilty of this for most things I do but when it comes to what you are wearing make it timeless, make it comfortable and make it simple. You’re love for each other doesn’t need to be dressed up!
2. Where to Go – When choosing locations think about places that have special meaning in your relationship. One of my recent couples those to do their session at a state park because that’s where they went camping the day they got engaged. Maybe its your favorite restaurant or bar. Maybe its the place you had your first date.
But if none of these ideas speak to you. I have a large list of gorgeous places all over central Florida that would make for a great location to do your engagement session. So no need to stress this one out.
3.Make-Up- If generally you do not wear make- up I encourage you to at least wear a little. Make a day of pampering yourself before your session and have your makeup done by a professional artist. It takes the pressure off of you so you can stay relaxed and beautiful! If you usually wear make up I encourage you to wear a little more than normal and make it a bit more dramatic – this helps define your facial features and looks beautiful on camera.
4. Get Excited About Your Session- Book your session on a date night. Make plans to enjoy your night after your session. And really?! Why not, you and your love are going to be all dressed up and looking good! Go show each other off afterwards!
